Fishers’ perceptions of biodegradable fishing gear adoption

Huu-Luat Do and Claire W. Armstrong from Dsolve was interviewed by sciencenorway.no earlier this summer about their recent article on fishers’ perceptions of biodegradable fishing gear adoption.

– This is a great opportunity to communicate our findings to a broader audience and highlight the relevance of the work in Dsolve, says Huu-Luat.

The article highlights that biodegradable fishing gear may be a promising solution to ghost fishing, as it breaks down over time and stops capturing marine life. However, as of July 2025, there is still low willingness among fishers to adopt such gear, due to concerns about efficiency, cost, and availability. Increased social acceptance, further development, and performance demonstration could help encourage a broader shift toward more environmentally friendly alternatives.
